Literature is Fun by Amira
“Rats of Nimh," a test on “Greyling” and “My Heart is In the Highlands,” and writing a good summary are all some of the fantastic things we are learning in Literature. Before we took a test on the Rats of Nimh (a story we read over the summer) we made posters that went along with the book to help us recall what happened in the story. There were lots of cool things we put on the posters, like a farm house (because the book’s setting was mostly on a farm) and a few rats in a rose bush. Then we made a corresponding title for the poster to show the theme of the book. To help us study we did a worksheet pertaining to the Rats of Nimh. After the test, Ms.Wilder assigned a book report/ book review. Then we went to the library and brain stormed, took notes, wrote a rough draft and then peer edited them. When we got back from the library, we read two stories in class by an author named Jane Yolen, the first book was called “Greyling” about a fisherman and his wife who got their wish of wanting a child. The second book “My Heart is In The Highlands” is an auto-biography about Jane Yolen and some of her own life experiences. In this story she also tells about how authors write fiction books using re-memory. Finally, after 5 days of intense studying, we took a test on both stories. I am looking forward to all the fun things we will be learning in Literature.

Hello! In our literature class we are learning a myriad of amazing and interesting things. We are in the middle of writing our book report drafts, and finishing our 4 step procedure of a summary. We are also reading mini stories, and having a quiz on them, like The Homecoming quiz. From what I hear, we will be starting a mini chess unit. That is all the main and general things that we are doing in literature.

In the sixth grade, five days a week, we have Literature with Ms. Wilder. In Literature we read a lot of stores. Reading stories allows us to learn about new places, use our imagination and share the feelings of the characters. In silent reading, we get to choose our own books and read quietly. This is a relaxing time. We also do book reports in Literature. In those book reports, we identify the main plot and character, describe what the book is about, and give our opinion of the book. Ms. Wilder is the best Literature teacher ever!

Do you need a book? To get one go to the school library. Mrs. Hunt would be happy to assist you. In the library there are many books to choose from. Books are plentiful from every genre. Mrs. Hunt reads a book to us overtime. There are magazines to read too. She has a wide variety of award books to choose from as well. The library has many genres of books. Some examples are nonfiction which is real stories based on things like space. Another genre is fiction which is fake stories like Goosebumps. There is also fantasy which is a form of fiction and is about dragons and princes. The students have silent reading time to read our books. We get to sit in beanbags and chairs while we read. If we aren’t checking out we can do small games and puzzles quietly. The library is a great place to look at and check out books.

In library we are learning to read quietly, finding the right book, and about book care. We should read quietly so we don’t distract every other person trying to read. We should also read quietly so our teacher can work. Library is a good, so we can find the right book. The librarian can help you if you tell her the type of book you are interested in, like mystery, fantasy, fiction, and more. If you open to a page and read it, if there are more than five words you don’t understand then you shouldn’t read it. Book care is great to learn if you like reading. You should never bend or shove the books. Also if you spill water, juice, or pop your pop on your book it will be wound. Library is the best specialty class if you love to read.

There are the fun and interesting things we are doing in Library. In Library we normally look for books. We can look-up books on the computer and see where they are located. You can also read the back of the book to see if it sounds interesting. If it sounds interesting you can check it out. To check-out books you can’t have two books out already. One other thing we do in Library is listening to Ms. Hunt read to us. Right now she is reading When You Reach Me. This book was a Newbery award winner in 2010. Ms. Hunt decided to read When You Reach Me because we have a book report going on and the book we choose has to have won an award. One last thing, Ms. Hunt does is helps us if we are having a hard time with something. She helps us by looking up a book and showing us where it is and if it’s in. She also helps by talking about our book reports with us. See? Doesn’t Library sound fun and interesting?
