Music Program
By: Anna Y.
St. Joseph School Vancouver- The 6th grade had a great time in band this year. We played our instruments, and Mrs. Miller, our music teacher, taught us about rhythms. They performed in a couple concerts. Next year students choose whether they will be in band or general music.
If you enjoy singing, and band just wasn’t really for you then you might enjoy the general music program. The general music class will include singing, composing and performing in front of the class. There will also be written tests. Yes, at some point everyone will have to perform in front of the class.
Mrs. Miller is thinking about restructuring the general music class so things are a bit up in the air. I am sure it is going to be great, fun and exciting.
If you really learned a lot in this year’s band class, next year you will learn even more. According to Mrs. Miller you will be learning, “different rhythms,” such as 16th notes and higher pitched notes. Testing in band is going to be just like the 6th grade year; where you play an assigned piece of music for Mrs. Miller and are graded on your performance. There might also be a written test or two in there.
The band will take part in a multi-school band festival. Students work on their 4 pieces of music for a couple months before the festival in April. The rehearsals include practicing with people from other schools. Then, later that night there is a multi-school performance. That is really going to be fun for those joining band!
I asked Mrs. Miller which music class has more people, either general music or band. Mrs. Miller said that it is typically split evenly for the amount of students that join each class for 7th grade. I really think next year’s band and general music program are going to be great, and I hope you think so too!

Music by Katie N.
In Music we are learning several interesting things. One of them is that we are learning how to play instruments. Some of the instruments we can play are trumpet, trombone, percussion, flute, and clarinet. Right now, we are learning some new notes as well as pitches (higher & lower tones) and sounds. We are just starting to use our music textbook, and Mrs. Miller, our music teacher, just handed out our holiday performance sheet music. For right now we are pausing in our textbook, on page 10. Again, we are going to start our holiday performance practice. The last thing we are learning is how to take of our instruments. Usually this means using valve oil or running a rag through our instrument. It’s important to keep our instruments clean so that the notes are correct. Those are a few of the interesting things we are learning in Music.
