INTERVIEWS
AND FACTS
Vancouver Saint Joseph School Press. This week I, Tyson G.,Interviewed and watched around middle school of 6th grade this is what I found. I asked Megan in 6th Grades a couple questions, 1). What is your Favorite Subject she then answered “Social Studies”, 2). Who is your favorite teacher; they then said “Miss. Pech” 3). What do you like about St. Josephs Atmosphere, they replied saying I feel like St. Joseph has a nice and friendly atmosphere then finally I asked what you are looking forward to next year, she then said “I can’t wait to be more respected as an older person and I can wait for field trips”. That was my interview with Megan thanks Megan. Next I interviewed Kyle in 6th Grade. I asked him all the same as Megan and this is what I got. 1). He likes Social Studies the most 2). His favorite teacher was Miss. Pech 3). He thought the atmosphere was good and easy to make friends.
Now I interviewed the two teachers Mrs. Wilder and Miss Pech first I interviewed Miss Pech 1). What do you think of the students she answered “I like them and most of them have a good personality and a good sense of humor and I can’t wait to see how they grow up” 2). What do you think of Mrs. Wilder she answered “I like how she get things done and she really knows what she’s doing” Next I interviewed Mrs. Wilder I asked her the exact same questions so I will just tell you her answers 1). “I like all of my students in different ways and don’t worry their all good things” Sadly I only had time to do one question due to time and was not able to plan another time to talk with her. Later I told Miss. Pech that she was voted #1 teacher in six grade she said “I am so touched but I feel me and Mrs. Wilder are Equals”.
Hearing all of this I was amazed at how everyone at St. Joseph cared and respected each other. I'm thankful more than ever to go to this school, and It makes me think how lucky I am compared to other people on earth. Doing this story for the press made me think about how some kids like me have not liked going to school because the teachers are “mean” now after doing this I realize that school is better than forced labor and just living on the street.
I hope the story helped people know what is going on at St. Joseph 2013-2014, and maybe making some kids at St. Joes know that teachers do care and we should be thankful to be at school over being chopping down trees all our lives or mining/farming. We are instead learning to live a happy life and go to college.

Seahawks
By: Logan K
The Seattle Seahawks have won the Super Bowl for the 1st time in franchise history against the Denver, Broncos in a 42-8 victory to win the Super Bowl in early February.
I asked John Hater, a life-long Seahawks fan how the Seahawks managed to win the Super Bowl? John’s reply was simple “I think the defense won the game.
Then I asked him who the star players were. John’s reply was “Jermain Kurse, Richard Sheman, and Marshawn Lynch. John also said” I like the Seahawks because they are local. Jack Eggleston a huge 49er fan (Seahawks arch rival)said” The Seahawks are an ok game with talent, and are just good at coming back.” He also said” It was a good game, Seahawks came back to win. Both teams well. It was a lucky tip by Sherman at the end.” I think it was a great play by a great player. If he would have been a second later, it would have been a touchdown, and the 49ers would have won the game.
Last John said” I think the Seahawks will win 5 Super Bowls in the next 12 years.”

Sausage Fest…everyone
is asking why?
(Vancouver, WA) As many of you people know the Vancouver Washington sausage fest will no longer be a tradition at St. Joseph school and church. Everyone wants to know why this is happening. This fall will be the last one due to the rates of money coming in to the school. Most staff, parents and students all say that this decision was made by Father Gary, our parish priest.
While interviewing Mrs. Lundy, I learned that this was true. “It’s Father’s decision” stated Mrs. Lundy. I also asked her about the future plans for replacing the money. She said that they have a committee working on ideas. For now they are focusing their effort on other fundraisers like the catholic appeal and the auction.
Also, questioning her on the fact that the Sausage Fest makes money not only from parents and parishioners, but the community of Vancouver. She explained “The community is the trick.” “I love and will miss the Sausage Fest.”
After interviewing Mrs. Lundy I still wanted to know more, so I went to Father. Again, he said that they were focusing on other fundraisers. “It is too much work, and is an inconvenience to the school.” he indicated. I also asked him if many other people were supporting him on his important decision. Father replied “The people that I have talked to are supporting me in which they agree why I am doing this.” Next, I asked what caused him to make this decision. He replied that this was a time to change a tradition. Also, that it was hard work every year.
Final thoughts from the author
I personally think from what I have learned asking and interviewing is that most people aren’t supporting Father and will miss the good memories and tradition of the Sausage Fest. My opinion, is that I, also will miss the anticipation throughout the year, and looking forward to that September weekend. Going to the Sausage Fest with my family and friends was a tradition in my family since the tradition began. To end, the decision is made but I and others, are still hoping for a change if decision.

Staff Changes: Who’s Your Teacher?
By Maria
St. Josephs Catholic School Vancouver, WA
This year St. Joseph’s School has been recently informed that there will be staff changes for the 2014-2015 school year. There are four teachers leaving, four moving to different grades, and there will have to be two new hired teachers. It will definitely be a change for our school.
Vice Principal Kathy Lundy feels that all the change is good for the teachers and the school. She says she will try to help the moving go smoothly by having meetings with the staff. Both principals Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Lundy look forward to hiring new teachers who will bring good qualities to our school. These new teachers need to be just right to replace the fabulous ones who we won’t forget!
Now, why is there so much movement? Lundy says that teachers need the change; it builds skills including flexibility, organization, and much more. It also gives them a new teaching opportunity. Ms. Pech, current sixth grade teacher, says she wants to move to fourth grade for an exciting journey. Also, Ms. Gotshall, a current fourth grade teacher says, “ I’m moving to sixth grade for an adventure. It’s always good to try new things.” There’s also an eighth grade teacher, Mrs. Mentele, leaving to spend more time with her family. It looks like most of the teachers are happy with the staff changes. But, fourth grade teacher Mrs. Senko says she’s sad to see people leave. Although she is also excited for her new teaching partner as well.
In addition to this chaos, St. Joe’s will need to hire teachers, too. Our school needs good leaders who have teaching experience and can teach students efficiently. They should be able to command their
classrooms, teach great work ethic, and have the ability to inspire and teach kids life lessons, and keys to success. It might be hard to find the right person, but in the end, St. Joe’s will have a great new addition!
Sometimes the staff changes can be more difficult than you would think. But overall, everyone should be happy. Lundy says that both the students and teachers benefit from these hard decisions and changes. In the future, I will have a better understanding of the process of new staff members. Although next year will be different, it will be a new and fun adventure!
“Changes are positive. Sad to see people leave, but excited for their change.”

Staff Changes

(Vancouver
WA) On May 28, 2014, St. Joseph School had some staff changes! Ms.
Pech and Ms. Gotshall are switching spots. Ms. Pech will now be in 4th
grade and Ms. Gotshall will now be in 6th grade. Ms. Mannenbach is
leaving as well as Ms. Wilder, Mrs, Boyle, and Mrs. Mentele. All of these
teachers are leaving the school.
Ms. Pech is happy, exited, and nervous about the new changes. She has taught 6th grade for 5 years and was ready for a change. Ms. Gotshall is also so exited to move to 6th grade, but she is sad to leave Mrs. Senko. Ms. Gotshall happy to move to 6th grade because she can teach a more advanced math class.
Some may ask why these changes are happening and why these teachers are leaving. Mrs. Harrison has assigned some of these teachers to another grade. The teachers that are leaving are leaving on their own; for good reasons. Ms. Mannnenbach is going to work in Oregon; which is closer to her home. Ms. Wilder is getting married and moving away. Mrs. Mentele is retiring to spend more time with her husband. Ms. Pech said, “These are exciting times!” Many others agree with Miss Pech. Next year will be a great one with all the new changes! I am so excited!

Staff Change by Anna
Vancouver WA- On May 28,2014 in St. Joseph Catholic School the teachers and principal decided to have some staff changes. On August 30, 2014, the teachers will be teaching in different grades.
When one teacher leaves then another teacher might want to take his/her spot. So they go to Mrs. Harrison, the principal, and ask if they can take their spot. The teachers do this because they might want to try something different and mix it up.
Mrs. Lundy, Vice Principal, said, “Some people like to change it up a bit.” The teachers agreed. “I like to mix it up,” said Miss Pech.
Future sixth graders. You might not have the best sixth grade teachers, but you will have fun with the new teachers next year. I am excted about seventh grade, too.

Miss Pech teaches the most fun and interesting subject, English! Out of the many things we are learning, some things we are focusing on are nouns and pronouns. The different nouns are collective, abstract, concrete, proper, and common. We took notes on all of these in our notebooks. To help us study, Miss Pech made a game called noun basketball. We sit and groups and there is one representative from each group. Miss Pech gives us a noun and the representative that stands up first says what kind of noun it is and if he/she gets it right, he/she get to shoot for points and the team with the most points at the end wins. Finally, we took a test. For pronouns, we learned that there are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person as well as singular and plural pronouns. We played a game that Miss Pech also came up with called 'pronoun rumble.' Something that we do all year long is journal entries. Miss Pech gives us a random topic and tells us to just write. They are timed and then we share them with a partner and sometimes the class. One last, but very important topic we are focusing on this year is organizing writing. Topic sentences are important for paragraphs and the different types include list statements, number statements, and occasion/position. We did many examples of these in our notes. We also make outlines and color code things for paragraphs. There are three RDF’s which stands for reasons, details, and facts. Each RDF has three E’s that stand for example. Of course a topic sentence and conclusion are also needed. We did movie reviews and blogging and used these. Overall, English is the best subject ever!

In English class, we are learning about new words, nouns, and how to write movie reviews.
First, we are learning Greek and Latin Root Vocab. Words. The first vocab. Root word was “ped” which means “foot”. Then we learned the root word “man” which means “hand”. Then we learned the root word “spec” which means “look” or “see”. The last root vocab. words that we learned (so far) is “mal” which means “bad” and “ben”, “bene”, and “bon”.
Next, we have learned how to write movie reviews. We learned movie review terms like spoilers, blurbs, and puns. Then in class, we watched movie reviews on YouTube. Then we watched our own movie, did the worksheet, wrote the Rough Draft, and typed the Final Draft after sharing and editing our Rough Drafts.
Lastly, we are learning about nouns and pronouns. We learned about common and proper nouns, concrete and abract nouns, collective nouns, and compound nouns. We even played noun basketball! Now we are learning about the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person singular and plural pronouns. We are also playing the Pronoun Rumble game!

Although the work we do in English 1 may look devastating, it's quite informal and sometimes even fun. In English 1 we are learning some really engrossing things. Every week we take a vocabulary quiz. We focus on Greek and Latin root words. So far we have done man (hand; like in manipulate), ped (foot; like in pedestrian), spec (watching/seeing; like in spectator), dict (speak; like in dictation), and ject (throw; like in reject). We are organizing our writing with color coding. Green means topic and conclusion. Red exhibits examples, and yellow demonstrates reasons, details and facts. To begin creating our paragraph we make a web. Then we create an outline. After revising we begin the actual paragraph. We write A LOT in English 1. We have our intriguing journal entries and a new blog (obviously). Our class recently completed the final touches to our latest paragraph, depicting our favorite season. So far, this is what we've been learning in English 1.

English is so exciting! Both classes were split into two groups (English 1 and 2). So far, we’ve been writing a lot of paragraphs. To write them, we made outlines and webbings. We also skimmed on nouns, verbs, and predicates. Most of our tests and quizzes have been on Latin root words such as ‘ped, man, spec, dict, and ject’. My favorite part has been writing in my journal. Miss Pech gives us prompts that we then write about in our journals. In the past classes, we learned about movie reviews and how to write them.

There are many parts in reading, writing, and expressing the English subject. Important parts are vocabulary. Sometimes, you have to have vocabulary words in paragraphs. Also, you need to know how to spell them. You need to study them because you have tests on the words. Another important part in English is writing; you will learn about writing format and how to write a good story. Essays are good to know about, like to indent and double space. We are also doing a blog. We need to pick a topic and give two or three examples. The last thing is grammar. We leaned four words; imperative, declarative, exclamatory, and interrogative, and those are 4 different types of sentences.

What we are learning in English: We are learning study habits for quizzes, tests, and sometimes even pop quizzes. We are doing multiple types of writing: we are doing paragraph outlines, blogs, and also brainstorming. We also do vocabulary, like words from Greek and Latin roots like Man/Manu, and dict, and also ped, last but not least ject. We get vocab slips to help us study. We cut the vocab slips out then we turn them over then we match them to their definition, and we also have vocab tests for the words at the end of the week and then at the end of the four weeks we have one big test for all the words we have learned so far. We are learning a myriad of amazing, fun, and sometimes hilarious stuff in English.
