Field day by Evan
(Vancouver, WA) On June 6, 2014 the eighth grade class hosted field day at St. Joseph catholic school. All grades participate in the Movie themed games that the eighth graders created. There was a nice variety of games they set up. Such as, the Spider Man obstacle course, Hogwarts dodge ball, Iron Man tag, and High School Musical chairs. Field day was fun, but there were also unfortunate events. Like local boy Wilson Keller who was accidently tackled and badly sprained his knee and was sent home in a wheel chair.
The reason eighth grade threw this all together was because it was their last year at St. Joseph. Another reason they held field day was because it was a way to give back to the school, and its students and teachers. Some of the people responsible for field day were Mrs. Jayne, Sarah Senko, Mary Harter, Josh Ramirez and Carter Standstrom. There are many more people responsible for field day, but I was unable to talk to all of them.
I asked the eighth graders if they enjoyed the process of preparing, creating and implementing the games for field day. Everyone said yes, and they also enjoyed playing the games themselves. I asked some of the sixth graders if they enjoyed all the games and they unanimously said yes. I interviewed several students asking them what their favorite game of field day was, and the majority said that Spiderman Obstacle course and Iron Man dodge ball were the best. From all interviews and on field reporting, I can say everyone had a blast.
I thought field day was awesome because we got to play fun games, like throwing water balloons at the eighth graders and the main event at the end of the day was the awesome kickball game between the teachers and the eighth graders. The final score ended in a tie which was a nice way to end the day. No one had to leave as the loser. I am very excited for next year’s field day to see what the next class of eighth graders plan. I am also anticipating my eighth grade year because I already have some great ideas for our field day, Class of 2016.

My favorite subject at school is P.E., what is yours? I think P.E.is entertaining because you can play all types of sports and games. In P.E. my favorite sport is basketball. I like basketball because we learn new things and practice our skills. Also we practice our shooting and lay-ups. Sometimes we do basketball drills. Another thing we do in P.E. is Volleyball. We practice our serving and sets. Also, we sometimes do scrimmages which are games. We practice our techniques and skills. We start out with warm ups and jogging around the gym. Sometimes she makes us jog for five minutes and sometimes only for two. Next she makes us do ten bicycles and ten dips. After that, we do rotation stations. P.E. is well liked by many students.

P.E. is one of the best physical activities to have a class for at school. Right now in Physical Education, we are learning how to play volleyball. In volleyball there are six key positions: server, two bumpers, two setters, and the center. The server serves the ball over the net. There are two ways to serve. One way is over hand another way is under hand. The setters set the ball up by passing it with their finger tips so the center can spike it over the net. The bumpers bump it with their forearm to help it go over the net and the center tries to spike it over the net to score. But before you can play this sport, you need to focus on good hand-eye coordination because if you don’t pay attention to the ball, the other team will score on you. This is why volleyball is an interesting sport to learn and play.

I think P.E. Is awesome. Right now, we are learning about volleyball. We now know how
to serve, hit the ball over the net, and to spike. Mrs. Jayne teaches us good sportsmanship. She
teaches us not to be annoyed if we lose. She also teaches us to compliment the other team and
not to brag.we learned how to practice so we get better, and to play more, and ultimately have
fun! I think those are some good reasons to prove that physical education is a great subject.

P.E. is not like other subject because with other subjects you have to write or have spelling tests. In P.E., before we play games we warm up. First we run around the gym for 2 minutes. Then we do dips. Dips are when you go against a wall and go up and down using your legs. We also do bicycles. Bicycles are when you lay on the floor and ride imaginary bicycles. After we warm up we play games. One of them is capture the flag, You play it by having two teams and each have a flag. You hide it and the other team tries to find it. Also, people like to play dodge ball and doctor doctor. If we don’t play games, we do a unit about sports like volleyball or football or basketball.

We are learning exercises, games, and sports in P.E. Some of the games we are playing are doctor, doctor, Capture the flag, and dodge ball. Also we do amazing exercises like running, doing push up’s, and bicycles. Finally we’re learning to do Volleyball, Basketball, and Soccer. These are some important rules for these sports. One major Volleyball rule is hitting the ball of a minimum of 3 times. Some of Basketball’s rules are not to double dribble and travel. Travel is when you carry the ball without dribbling it. Finally some of Soccer’s rules are to kick the ball into the goal and if you make it you SCORE! We’re doing amazing, fun, and exciting things in P.E.

What are we learning about in PE? During PE we are learning about volleyball, which includes, serving, bumping, setting and spiking. Serving is the most critical part of volleyball because if you don’t get your serves over then you will not be able to get many points. There are two kinds of serving underhand and overhand. Bumping, setting and spiking are the three hits in volleyball. In PE we would bump and set to partners and bump and set to the wall. Also we worked on spike approach, which can be difficult. We did some exciting stations containing bumping, setting and spiking. This past week we have done some serve practice and scrimmaging. So far it’s been a fantastic year in PE and I can’t wait to continue with volleyball and learn more new things!
