Sixth Graders Take part In Mummification Process
By: Marianna
Vancouver, WA, Room 14- On November 26th, both sixth grade classes learned about Egyptian mummies in Social Studies. Ms. Pech decided that the sixth grade should experience how mummies were mummified in Egypt. Each color group of both classes (red, yellow, green, and blue) got their own chickens, so 8 in total. They were to rub salt on the outside and inside of the chicken and leave it like that for a few days. Everyone took turns for jobs: chief embalmer, assistant, fall guy/ gal, materials person and the recorder. I was in red group with Jessie A. (13), Julian B. (12), David B. (12), Sydney C. (12) and Skylar D. (12). We had to create a tomb with a shoebox, name our chicken, decorate the tomb with things that our chicken would have in the underworld, and wrap our chicken with cloth. It was a lot of work but it was worth it. We named our chicken Sit-ahh Nub, which I guess means “Mysterious Golden Lady.” 😏 I interviewed other people and here is what they said. Jessie A. (13) “In our tomb we put a flat screen TV, money, a bed, Lamborghini, mansion, boats, helicopter, a jet, food and servant/guard. I liked doing the chicken mummies!” Amanda A. (12) “The gross part was taking the salt out from the inside of the chicken, but overall it was a lot of fun!”😉 The chicken mummies was a huge success! Be sure to thank Ms. Pech for doing this for us, we enjoyed it a lot! 😄

In Social Studies we have learned about life before us along with periods of time, timelines, and got to chance to visit a mummy
exhibit. The time before us was called the Stone Age, when other species existed. There were four species before us: the Australopithecus, Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus, and Neanderthals. To survive they became hunter-gatherers whom at first were scavengers then learned how to hunt later on. They existed around 3.6 million BCE to 30,000 BCE. Now, without periods we wouldn't be able to make organized timelines of history. The way the years were split up was based on the birth of Jesus. The abbreviations of the periods of time are BC, BCE, AD, and CE. BC and BCE are the same, AD and CE are the same. the meaning of BC is Before Christ, BCE means Before Common Era, AD is Anno Domine (The Year of Our Lord), and CE is Common Era. Last, the Mummy Exhibit 6th grade visited was at OMSI. There were over 45 mummies in the exhibit. They came from all over the world, from all kinds of countries. They also weren't all human. Any living that has died, was preserved, and still has tissue on it is a mummy. In Social Studies there is so much to learn about how life was before us.

Social Studies is a fun subject where you get to learn about all sorts of things in history. This class is taught by Ms. Pech, she has been teaching sixth grade for four years and she has really fun learning styles that you can be active in, instead of sitting for forty minutes. The first thing she taught us was history skills. We learned what AC, BC, BCE, and CE meant and we took a quiz on it. Then afterward she taught us about archeology. And how archeologist find clues and predict thing, and then showed us interesting pictures of mummies and artifacts. Third she taught us about the Seven Wonders. She pared us into groups and we started working on a skit we had to perform to the class. We looked up information, took notes, and used teamwork to come up with the scripts. After the class made the scripts it was time to act. Everybody had a skit to do in front of the class with the props that they brought from home. We took notes on the other groups wonder so we could learn about the wonder. One of the latest topics was early humans. Everyone made a poster about each type of early human. She grouped us into types of hominids. Australopithecus, Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus, Neanderthals, and Homo Sapiens. Then we took a “Gallery Walk” and took notes on other peoples posters. We didn’t work with others but we still clearly learned about early humans. We learnt how the civilized, made tools and hunted-gathered. I love walking into Ms. Pech’s classroom everyday because I know we are going to do something fun in social studies.

There’s lots of intriguing information we are learning in Social Studies! We do posters for almost all of the topics we study. Once we made posters we did gallery walks and take notes. Making posters is lots more fun than doing worksheets for homework. Everybody has done research, notes, and skits for the 7 Wonders of the World. Ms. Pech put us in groups and we were assigned a Wonder. My group took notes and talked through them. We put on skits that we wrote ourselves, which was the last thing we did for our Wonder. Next, we learned about coordinates for latitude and longitude and played a game that will help remember coordinates. The game we played was battleship. It was so much fun! Even though winning the game came down to luck. In my opinion, the best part of Social Studies was when we performed our skits. These are a few of the things we did in Social Studies.

In Social Studies class which Ms. Pech teaches, we learn a great deal of information about ancient people.
She makes it fun by doing awesome activities to help us learn. So far we have worked on skits, posters, cave art and watched
videos. For example, we recently watched the Savage Stone Age videos that taught us about the ways the early humans lived.
That brings me to my next topic: The Stone Age. We learned about the early humans for example we are Homo Sapiens!
We also learned about things like the plant flax is what string was originally made out of. The final topic I want to share with
you is the 7 wonders. We got to make our own skits! We made props, costumes, and we even got to write them.
After all of the planning, we got to share our skits with the class. It was a bundle of fun! All in all Social Studies has
proved to be the best class ever.

Social Studies, what is the purpose? I have learned a few things in Social Studies things this year. One of the things we have learned so far this year is the Original Seven wonders. A couple of the Seven Wonders are the Tempe of Artemis and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. We also did a skit in class on our wonder. As we experienced the skits the turned out hilarious. So far in my years of schooling I’ve learned a great tip. There is always a test after having fun in class. The test turned out to be easy and simple as long as you studied. Secondly we talked about the six themes. Some of the six themes are religion, society/culture, or economics, geography, politics, and technology to try to explain the ways of our world. As a project we created a poster for a theme with a partner. Macey and I teamed up and made a poster of religion. Other groups created their own and their posters turned out just as well. Like I said before you can’t have fun without a test at the end. Our quiz was nothing tough as long as you knew the definitions of the themes. Finally our newest project, we made a postcard of info about a story article from the newspaper or news. On the postcard itself we had to draw a picture of the scene with using minimal words if possible. My personal story was based of a man petting a dog and he ended up in jail. Social Studies is a tremendous subject and I can’t wait to learn lots more.

Social Studies is my favorite subject. Is it yours? Well I like Social studies because we do different things like, study the ancient peoples, learn about longitude and latitude, and the Greeks. The different types of early people are Australopithecus, Homo Hibilis, Homo Erectus, Neanderthals, and Homo Sapiens Sapiens. We are Homo Sapiens Sapiens. Longitude and latitude are imaginary lines that measure coordinates of where the places on the map are. The Greeks are people who lived in Greece. I don’t know much about them, but I soon will!

We learn a lot in my favorite class, Social Studies. We do plays about topics to help us understand them better. When we do plays everyone gets a part and they are fun. You are also graded on the plays. Another thing you do is take lots of notes that turn out to be a lot of help. The notes usually give lots of information. We might take time in class to study for an upcoming test. The notes will help us for test. Flash cards help us study, too. One of our many tests was called The Seven Wonders test. And this is why Social Studies is my favorite class.

Do you like Social Studies? Social Studies is a super exciting subject. We just finished learning about the six themes, the seven Wonders, and are currently learning about maps. When we were working on the six themes we made posters, presented our posters and had a test. When we were working on the seven Wonders we did a super fantastic project. First we researched and wrote about our wonder. Next we made skits. Then we had a test. Now we are learning about maps. We have not finished learning about maps so we might have a test. Do a super fun project or even create our own map! I am excited to see what Miss Pech teaches us next.
